[edit] Main Categories

I have created links on the side bar under navigation for all the links that were on the main categories template. Since only 40 articles currently have this template on it, I think it would be better situated on the sidebar. This way it would be on all the pages. Tell me what you think, and when you are ready we can remove the template from all the pages. -I Fly WikiAir - Ben 05:08, 26 June 2007 (MST)

I thinks that's a great idea Ben! Go right ahead!

[edit] Categories

Have started sorting airports into categories. All existing articles linked to from Cat:Airports have been put into national categories (e.g. Category:Airports of the United States), which in turn have been added to continental lists (at least for Europe and Asia, so far), and these are subcategories of Cat:Airports. The long list in Cat:Airports would be obsolete but I kept it for the moment
I will think about how to subcategorize other topics as well and try to edit categories when I got a clue.
I'd appreciate your feedback and would revert the changes I've made if you don't like the approach.

[edit] Special characters in page names?

Just came across an issue regarding slashes in page titles. LA/Ontario International Airport is a good example. The slash acts as a path divider and makes a link to a page with a name containing a slash unusable as the browser runs into a 404 because there is no such directory.
Is this a limit of the wiki software or does a workaround exist, other than renaming the page to a maybe "unofficial" title?
electrique 05:42, 23 July 2007 (MDT)

Uh, read, think, post. Right. This issue seems to be based on the PrettyURLs. Tried to get behind that one but miserably failed to find a solution. I guess you implemented the plugin by using a query string ('title'). As far as I read in relevant docs there should be some use_sub_dir option, although I am not sure of how to configure it. electrique 06:34, 23 July 2007 (MDT)

Slashes in titles work when redirected to, it seems. If there's no possible option to work around the restriction it might be a solution to use alternate titles for links and redirecting them to the correct article.
btw: changed my email as I already allowed you and bluebottle did not obey. new email on my page.electrique 05:33, 24 July 2007 (MDT)

Obviously it's the same issue with periods in page titles (see Charles_M._Schulz_-_Sonoma_County_Airport). electrique 03:14, 25 July 2007 (MST)

[edit] Short URLs

Hey when you changed to short urls did you follow the instructions on this page [1]? -I Fly WikiAir - Ben 05:24, 26 July 2007 (MST)

[edit] Yeah...

Getting the pretty URLs to work was no easy task. I used that page, as well as a few other articles to finally get it to work. Wikiadmin 08:42, 26 July 2007 (MST)

[edit] RE: Going back ugly?

I don't really know what the solution may be. Wikipedia has similar issues, they seem to set up redirects automatically when conflicting pagenames occur. Should be a bot task, although I don't know which bot can do this.
tbh, I like the idea with the "pretty" URLs and would like to keep it. Guess it depends on the number of "conflicts" occuring. For now it's less than 10 pages involved, so we could work around it for the moment. I don't think that there's a lot of pages to come to cause any headache, considering that most people won't even access a page by entering the correct pagename (at least in the cases already mentioned). So redirects will do fine, at least for a while. electrique 15:01, 26 July 2007 (MST)

[edit] Thumbnail issues

I think this link will help you resolve the thumbnail issue. http://www.nabble.com/Thumbnail-problem-t4059462.html

[edit] Thumbnails

I already read that link, and it didn't help.

I've never had to install a separate program called "Imagemagic" to Mediawiki before to get thumbs to work. I'm not sure why they just stopped working. I can't seem to get them to work with .jpgs, gifs, pngs, or any other image.

I'm really starting to grow weary of all the bugs in Mediawiki. Wikiadmin 20:23, 27 July 2007 (MST)

Been roaming the web again for a possible solution and came across the fact that earlier revisions of ImageMagick did not have the -thumbnail option as Mediawiki could do it by itself. However (beginning with MediaWiki 1.9.1, if I remember it correctly) IM is requied for such tasks, IM6 that is. I don't know how you did it before, but it might be an option to install this program and see if it works. electrique 09:26, 29 July 2007 (MST)

[edit] Thumbnails issue resolved

I was able to fix the thumbnails issue. The path to convert thumbs was not correct in LocalSettings. Should be working fine now! Wikiadmin 10:49, 29 July 2007 (MST)

[edit] CASS?

Hey sorry but I can't update CASS I have no info to login. If you want to email the info to login thats cool I don't mind doing it. I am not a pilot and I can't the CASS list anywhere I am assuming it in the members only section. -I Fly WikiAir - Ben 18:44, 29 July 2007 (MST)

[edit] Repeated Vandalism

As you will have noticed WikiAir is currently experiencing massive vandalism. As the "attacks" originate from changing IPs there's obviously no sense in blocking. Simple rollbacks usually don't work as the there are several edits per page, so the vandalism has to be deleted manually.
It might be an idea to restrict editing to registered users, but that would most certainly limit the number of people contributing to this project.
Do you have any other idea how to protect WikiAir, or do we have to take the dreadful task of restoring articles over and over again?

edit: After checking the IPs most of them were open proxies. Wikipedia tried to run a bot to automatically prevent edits originating from such proxies, but failed, afaik, due to the server load involved in running such a bot.

[edit] Importing

I tried to import some pages via an XML-file but the import tool keeps telling me it wasn't able to, possibly due to excessive file size. Can you tell me what's the max file size this MW-installation will accept? thx Jana a.k.a. electrique 07:09, 24 October 2007 (MST)

Alright, seems to be around 2MB, works now. Jana a.k.a. electrique 16:52, 24 October 2007 (MST)

[edit] Load times

Is it just me or has the server become really slow? It keeps loading for ages despite a 16k DSL or the really fast company network. Jana a.k.a. electrique 11:06, 1 February 2008 (MST)
