Overview

Suvarnabhumi International Airport was opened in 2006, mainly to replace Bangkok's other airport Don Muang International Airport.
After a number of incidents (airport tarmac and runways) and overcrowding most domestic flights moved back to Don Muang, leaving BKK with international and high-density domestic services.
Suvarnabhumi is a major stopover point on the Kangaroo Route from Europe to Australia and acts as a minor focus city for european airlines (such as Lufthansa who also serve Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City apart from their german destinations). The airport is located 25km south-east of Bangkok city center and currently has a capacity of 45 million passengers per year.

Runways

BKK has two parallel runways:

  • 01R/19L: 4000m
  • 01L/19R: 3700m

Terminals

The airport has one large terminal (which has been claimed to be the biggest in the world according to floor space, but the terminal at Hong Kong International Airport is a bit larger.
A second terminal for low-cost carriers is currently under construction.
