Overview

San José was a small village of little significance until 1824. In that year, Costa Rica's first elected head of state, liberal Juan Mora Fernández, decided to move the government of Costa Rica from the old Spanish colonial capital of Cartago and make a fresh start with a new city. This was a time of much optimism in the newly independent nation of Central America, of which Costa Rica was at that time a state (see: History of Central America). The new capital of San José grew rapidly, extending into the Central Valley. Because of its late 18th century origin, San José has little of the Spanish colonial architecture common in most other Latin American capitals.

Where to Eat

Pollo Loco

Around the corner from the Hotel Corobici is the Pollo Loco, a great chicken eatery. They have beer and chips that are great, and very inexpensive.

Clubs, Bars, Nightlife

Blue Marlin Bar

I recommend the famous "Blue Marlin Bar". To get there, take a taxi to the Hotel Del Rey. The bar is downstairs and can be entered off of the street. It's a great place to meet many "chicas" from Central America and enjoy some cold beer. You can even go and gamble, too. It is a safe area, very crowded, but definitely a taxi ride (only about a dollar or two from the Corobici).

The Blue Marlin in Manual Antonio is also amazing. Slightly more expensive then in San Jose. Ask for the "stawberry coconut drink," and you wont be disappointed.
