Getting Around
Subway
Traveling during the day, I'd advise the subway all the way. Grab a metrocard (an unlimited daily is great if you are planning to use it to hop on and off)and a map from the token clerk. Then go exploring!
Things to Do and See
- Summer in the city is disgustingly sticky, but we have managed to still make it so we don't want to leave.
- Swing dance at MidSummer Night Swing under the stars at Lincoln Center. You can dance for free on the Plaza, or pay an admission price to go on the dance floor. Lessons early on in the evening by professional instructors from sponsoring dance schools.
- Watch an old movie from the comfort of a picnic blanket under the stars in Bryant Park on 42nd Street. One of my new favorite traditions. Free, but get there early!
- Go to the TKTS for day of performance discount tickets to Broadway and Off-Bway shows that have available seats. NY SECRET: Go to the downtown location, which accesses the same database but has hardly any line. You'll wait for hours with the tourists in Times Square. Believe me coz I have done it. Mom taught me the secret.
- Summerstage in Central Park
- Shakespeare in the Park - I did it for the first time last summer. WOW. What a great experience. We saw the Two Gentlemen of Verona. It was fantastic. You need to get tickets earlier on in the day, first come first serve basis. My friend was not able to make it, so I gave my ticket to a guy hoping to get in. Though I strongly suspect he was gay, I think he proposed, lol. He was really happy.
