Getting Around

  • An integral part of Miami Dade County's mass transit system is Metro Rail. Metro Rail is an elevated rail system which runs from The City of Hialeah on the northwest end of Miami Dade County to Kendall in the south end of the county. In Miami's downtown area, the Metro Rail connects to the People Mover, a smaller rail line with limited stops in the downtown area. Bicycles are allowed aboard both Metro Rail and designated Metro Buses. The fee schedule is inexpensive and the connections to the best south Miami Dade County has to offer are numerous. For instance, crews laying over on Miami Beach and wishing to visit Brickell, Key Biscayne, Sunset Place Mall, Dadeland Station Mall, Dadeland Mall, or even The Falls Shopping Center can take the Metro Bus to downtown Miami, board Metro Rail and arrive at any of the above destinations within a few minutes for considerably less than renting a car or taking a taxi. The difference in fares being less than US$2.00 for Metro Rail versus upwards of US$60.00 for a taxi.

Where to Eat

Near Miami International Airport

  • Latin Cafe - Across from the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Excellent Cuban food, try the Vaca Frita. On the back of the menu is a huge selection of sandwiches. They also serve pitchers of Sangria for around $13.
  • Chinese All-You-Can-Eat Buffet - This one is located behind the Crowne Plaza. When you leave the Crowne, turn right, walk to the end of the block, and hang a right. It is one block down on the right.

S.W. 8th Street Area (Calle Ocho) Little Havana

  • Along this fabled thoroughfare you'll discover practically every encarnation of Latin/ American cuisine from Texan to Patagonian. A good rule of thumb to follow - the smaller the locale, the cheaper the items on menu, the closer you get to an awesome home cooked meal. Try it.
    • La Carreta - Huge portions, heavy garlic, casual atmosphere and entrees in the $8-12 range.
    • Cafe Versailles - A South Florida landmark.

Near the Sherry Frontenac Hotel

  • Casa Larios - Gloria Estefan's restaurant on Ocean Drive. Great Cuban food.
  • Las Vacas Gordas (literally, The Fat Cows) - Argentine - Bring an appetite. Try "The Enrollado" (the one thats rolled up). You may need assistance getting back to the Sherry if you eat the whole thing.

Clubs, Bars, Nightlife

Miami Beach

  • Mynt on Miami beach is the hot spot for now, $20 cover is worth every penny on the weekend to hang with the nip tuck crowd.
  • Crowbar is a little younger of a crowd
  • The Clevelander is right on the beach and a great place night or day.
  • Niki Beach/Pearl is a night club on the most southern part of the beach, it has great sushi in the day and is a hot spot at night for the 25-35 crowd.

Coconut Grove

(mostly bars less clubs)

  • America West lost its boys at Moes Tavern (good place to watch the game)
  • Beach bar is wild on college night for 50 cent beer
  • Green street cafe is also good day or night.
  • Mambo Cafe is a good place to get Cuban food.

Near Miami International Airport

  • Bryson's - The Legend. There are only two kinds of pilot joints - Bryson's - and I forget what the other one is. This emerald temple to cirrhosis of the liver has hosted more FAA checkrides and witnessed the spawning of more aircraft pilot careers than any other coordinate on this god forsaken earth. Great food, great beer, a fun time. Outdoor seating with several TVs to watch the game - I'm not sure which one. They serve until 4:00 am. And if you listen carefully, you can still hear a "6" running up in the middle of the night.
