Lufthansa (Deutsche Lufthansa AG) is the german flag carrier and the sixth largest airline in the world, operating a fleet of over 400 aircraft to more than 200 destinations in around 100 countries. As a founding member of the Star Alliance the airline has one of the most comprehensive networks in the industry. Lufthansa is based in Cologne and has its hubs at Frankfurt International Airport, Munich International Airport and Zurich International Airport, with Duesseldorf, Hamburg and Berlin acting as focus cities.
New Routes for 2008
- Duesseldorf International Airport already had business jet service to Newark and Chicago and will now be upgraded to a transatlantic focus city with new mainline services to Newark, Chicago and Toronto starting in March 2008.
- New business jet services operated by PrivatAir on behalf of Lufthansa will likely connect Newark and/or Chicago to Milan-Malpensa.
- New services from Frankfurt: Bergen, Keflavik, Bristol, Seattle, Calgary, Nanjing, Luanda, Malabo (en route to Abuja)
- New services from Munich: Shenyang (via Seoul), Singapore, Keflavik, London City
- New services from Berlin: London City
- Dropped routes: Munich - Montreal, Frankfurt - Guangzhou will no longer continue to Manila

Speculations
Airline insiders have drawn the following scenarios for future developments:
- bmi, already partly owned by Lufthansa, may be fully acquired (as the current majority owner wants to sell his stake until the end of the decade). Lufthansa would benefit from valuable slots at London Heathrow International Airport.
- Scandinavian Airlines System, a partner in the Star Alliance, is seen as a candidate for takeover by market analysts.
- There have been speculations regarding a takeover of Iberia which would give Lufthansa a massive network to Latin America, a region where the airline is currently very weak. Seems to be unlikely as British Airways are already stakeholders of Iberia.
- Struggling Alitalia has been linked, among others, with Lufthansa, although CEO Mayrhuber publicly expressed no interest in the airline at the moment.
- Lufthansa is currently opting to obtain a 25% share in LOT Polish Airlines.
