Berlin-Tegel International Airport (IATA: TXL, ICAO: EDDT) is currently the major airport serving Berlin, Germany. It is located northwest of the centre within the boundaries of Berlin.
Tegel evolved from the lack of capacity of Berlin-Tempelhof International Airport during the Berlin Airlift. French troops hastily built a new airfield with the longest runway in Europe which became Tegel airport.
During the Cold War airline traffic to Berlin was restricted to allied carriers. German airlines were not allowed to serve Berlin until the 1990s.
Tegel is scheduled to be closed in 2011 oder 2012 when the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport is complete.
